Liz rides "Gus McCrae" (yeah, we loved Lonesome Dove!) for the first time, and also is trying to negotiate those double reins we use when we start our horses. Plans are to train her on double reins soon! (One rein on snaffle to teach turning, backing, lift the head, and the other rein on snaffle for collection, stopping in case of emergency.)

Since Gus has had quite a diverse 'colthood', these goats were a non event with him, here on his 2nd ride out of the round pen. Gus was bred and born in Indiana, and I picked him up when he was a weanling, brought him to Texas and raised him. He grew up in the pasture with cattle, dogs running around, other horses, broodmares, foals, sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, piggity running around, an all natural upbringing so logs, boggy areas, creeks, ponds are just part of life to him.

No mercy on the youngsters! We start despooking exercises immediately, and we love the way this 3-yr-old gelding responds to things that scare him . . . these dead trees (leftover from Hurricane Ike's wrath) are scary enough just lying there, but after the sun bleaches them, they turn into white sabre-toothed tigers, apparently. Gus wasn't bothered by these at all, but I made him ride up to them anyway.

Notice the truck and trailer zooming by at 65mph in the background . . . our arena is right on a major busy highway, so 18-wheelers, ambulances, fire engines, flapping tarps, hissing air brakes, etc. are a daily event here. Liz rides "Gus" this morning . . . their first time together . . . not bad for his 2nd time out of the round pen!

It's great to start the morning on a young colt, 2nd ride out of the round pen! Meet "Gus McCrae", half brother to our stallion "Alen's Painted Desert" and also half brother to our beautiful "Katie" . . . this youngster has had a rock solid foundation and will be for sale soon. Bronze buckskin, barefoot, all natural gait, no pace, magnificent athletic rocking canter, backs, pivots, forehand turns, side passes, extremely sensible.

Round pen work, one of his first 5 rides in the round pen in halter only on 3/27/12.
